About me

My name is Midori, originally from Japan, lived in UK, then now I live in Andalucia Spain.

I started painting while I was living in England with my English husband and soon painting became essential part of me.

Although self taught, my works were accepted by the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and exhibited in the Mall Gallery in London in 2000, 2001 and 2002.

In 2004 I moved to live in Spain with my ailing husband and my life was dedicated to looking after him so I didn’t do any painting until his death in 2011.

It was in 2013 when I had a solo exhibition in Tokyo Japan, then I returned to Japan every year to hold solo exhibition until the pandemic restricted my travelling in 2019.

I lost inspiration for painting since then but in 2023 I decided to visit the Sahara desert, and met people in the village that is the gateway to the Sahara, there I regained power and enthusiasm for the art.

Now I do mostly pencil drawings and mixed media paintings,  my main subject is the nomad life in M’hamid El Ghizlane.

Those people mostly nomad origin  men working in the desert mesmerize me by their spontaneous smile and energy.  They are poor but their soul is pure and rich.

My dream now is to have my gallery in M’hamid one day, so that the people there can see my original work and the gallery will provide a forum for the young generation to interact through art.

I hope you enjoy viewing my works here and have a glimpse of the nomad life in Sahara.  If you are interested in owning some of my work, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Thank you.
